The Swedish Language

Swedish is a North Germanic language spoken by approximately 10 million people, predominantly in Sweden and parts of Finland. Swedish is to a considerable extent, similar to the Norwegian language and to a lesser extent with Danish.
English-language teaching is compulsory in Swedish schools and millions of Swedish people have a good working knowledge of English. Many Swedes can speak English fluently and English is widely understood and is Sweden’s international business language.
The use of the English language extends to the vast majority of websites, including government information websites. English language TV programs are broadcast in English with Swedish subtitles.
All foreign nationals who move to Sweden are entitled to attend a free Swedish language course which also provides information about Swedish society and culture. For anyone wishing to work in Sweden, it is very useful to be able to speak Swedish, and a level of proficiency in the language is likely to be required by many Swedish employers.
