Two summers ago my girlfriend Donna nearly died. She collapsed in North Dakota, USA, and underwent emergency neurological and cardiac surgery. She was in hospital for a month. When we returned to the UK we were both changed people. At the time of the accident we were both senior editorial executives on UK national newspapers. Suddenly, working 10-12 hour days to further our ascent of the greasy pole of UK journalism did not seem very important. Indeed it seemed faintly ridiculous. We were not in a position to enjoy the rewards that our hard work was providing. We weren't even really enjoying our work. It was time for a change.

Last autumn, we visited Sweden on our first holiday since the accident. We loved the north. We loved the space, the light and the landscape. There was an otherness about northern Sweden that we found bewitching. It was somewhere we thought we could live. We checked the house prices and were more than pleasantly surprised. We could sell our house in the UK and buy a house outright in northern Sweden. During our initial research we came across the Future Jokkmokk website. I e-mailed the website and received an almost instant response from David Carpenter. When we returned to the UK we stayed in touch. David, and his wife Kerstin, were endlessly patient when it came to dealing with our bottomless pit of questions. Our every niggle and worry would usually result in an e-mail to David. He always answered swiftly, courteously and, most importantly, informatively. Even if he couldn't provide a definitive answer he always offered us context in which to frame an approach to a problem. Having someone who had moved to Sweden at the other end of an e-mail was immensely reassuring.

I'm almost certain that without the Carpenters' support and advice we would probably have found the whole process too daunting and given it up as an impossible dream. Instead I write this looking out over the deep blue lake that laps at the edge of our new northern Swedish property. It is no exaggeration to say that the Carpenters played a vital role in us achieving our dream of a more simple life.

We are due to return to the UK tomorrow for about six weeks. Our stay has been incredibly successful, we have achieved all of our aims, and more! With your help we have been able to start the process of purchasing a house, begin to start a business and make some good friends, all within only three weeks!
